White Muscle Disease in Lambs

A Case Study from the College's Veterinary Clinics- December 2024

Recently, an owner of a sheep farm visited the college's veterinary clinics, reporting a condition affecting his lambs. The animals exhibited symptoms such as an inability to stand or move, muscle weakness, and difficulty breathing. Following thorough examinations conducted on a lamb brought to the clinic, it was diagnosed with White Muscle Disease, a condition primarily affecting young animals like lambs and calves due to a deficiency in Vitamin E or selenium. This deficiency results in muscle tissue damage, where the affected muscles appear white due to pathological changes.

Dr. Shivan Nawzad Hussein supervised a group of students in examining the lamb. The symptoms were evident, including muscle stiffness, weakness, and an inability to stand. Immediate care was provided, Vita. E and Selenium was injected, as well as essential dietary supplements of Vitamin E and selenium were prescribed for the animals in the affected farm.

The urgency of the situation was emphasized, as severe cases of the disease can lead to death due to heart muscle damage if untreated. After a short period and consistent follow-up with the farm owner, it was confirmed that the lambs responded well to the prescribed treatment and fully recovered.

This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and intervention, especially in areas previously known for such cases due to a deficiency of essential minerals and vitamins. as well as proper nutritional management, in preventing and addressing such conditions in livestocke.
