Dr.( Maryam Ibraheem Yaseen ), Assistant Professor in the Surgical and Internal medicine Department, supervised a group of students at the college clinics during the performance of a surgical procedure on a one-year-old cat. The surgery was conducted at the owner's request and was elective in nature, rather than medically necessary.
The hysterectomy procedure in female cats, commonly referred to as "spaying," entails the surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries. This intervention is designed to prevent pregnancy and mitigate mating-related behaviors. Additionally, it contributes to reducing the population of stray cats and offers long-term health benefits for the feline.

Health Benefits of the Procedure:
• Control of Unwanted Reproduction: This procedure assists in managing the cat population and alleviates overcrowding in animal shelters.
• Reduction of Mating-Related Behaviors: It diminishes behaviors associated with mating, such as inappropriate urination.
• Disease Prevention: The surgery lowers the risk of developing breast tumors as well as cancers of the uterus and ovaries.

Procedure Steps:
1. Anesthesia
2. Sterilization
3. Surgical Incision
4. Removal of the Uterus and Ovaries
5. Closing the Incision

Typically, recovery from the procedure is quick, with the cat regaining its strength within a few days to a week.
