On Monday, October 14, 2024, a ram was brought in to the clinics of college of Veterinary Medicine for a castration procedure.

Dr. Nathem Jawad Hassan\ an academic staff working with the surgeons’ team performed the surgery and supervised a group of students assisting in performing the operation under local anesthesia. Multiple techniques are available for castration, and the choice of method depends on the surgeon’s evaluation of the animal’s condition.

The main reasons for performing castration include:

  • Preventing unwanted breeding
  • Improving meat quality
  • Enhancing growth, fat distribution, and wool quality
  • Easier management: Castrated rams are generally less aggressive, especially during breeding season, which helps reduce fighting and injuries among the animals.
